What are the San Juan Islands?

Blog provided by San Juan PM

The San Juan Islands are a beautiful and pristine set of islands located in the northwest corner of Washington State. The islands offer stunning views, peaceful surroundings, and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy.

The San Juans are made up of over 170 individual islands, but only a few are inhabited. Orcas Island is the largest island in the group and is home to the town of Eastsound, which offers restaurants, shops, and a variety of lodging options (like a san juan island cabin rental). Lopez Island is also home to a small town with restaurants and shops, as well as several bed-and-breakfasts. Other popular islands include Shaw Island, which has an abundance of wildlife including bald eagles and deer; Deer Harbor on Orcas Island; Roche Harbor on San Juan Island; and Friday Harbor on San Juan Island.

There are plenty of things to do on the San Juans depending on your interests. If you enjoy nature walks or hikes there are numerous trails available throughout the different islands – from easy flat paths suitable for all ages/abilities to more strenuous hikes with steep elevation changes (be sure to check out Mt Constitution on Orcas!). If you’re looking for some water fun there’s kayaking/canoeing ( rentals available), sailing ( lessons & charters available), fishing ( both saltwater & freshwater), swimming…or just relax & take in oneof many spectacular sunsets! In addition to all that’s offered outdoorsy types can find galleries/museums , wineries , farmers markets AND some great places for eats – whether its grabbing coffee at an espresso stand or sitting down for dinner at an award winning restaurant .
